Bodmin Dances to Commemorate D-Day!

D Day Dance and commemorations , Bodmin, St Petroc's Church, Tea Dance

This June marks 75 years since the D-day landings, where Allied forces launched a combined naval, air and land assault on Nazi-occupied France.

It was the largest naval, air and land operation in history, and although the operation did not bring an end to the war in Europe,  it did begin the process through which victory was eventually achieved.

So, to mark this day 75 years later in Bodmin, we are supporting St Petroc’s Church Tea Dance and we will be re-interpreting our WW2 galleries within the museum, with some fascinating new objects on display.

D-Day Tea Dance at St Petroc’s Church. Bodmin

St Petroc’s Church will be hosting an afternoon tea dance on Thursday 6th June at 2pm. There will be plenty of tea, cake and live music from Moodswing and of course… dancing!

“After the success of the Bodmin 100 Remembrance Week, I thought it would be good to continue the commemoration through the tea dance, remembering the D-Day landings 75 years ago” explained Roland Oakley, events manager.

The tea dance gives an opportunity for the community to come together for an afternoon of entertainment and to commemorate D-Day 75 years ago… to the day!

The flags will be flying and the church will be decorated with union jacks and bunting and we’d love attendees to come in 1940’s fashion!

MoodSwing will be playing some great old favourites of the time such as;

“Little Brown Jug” (quickstep), “In the mood” (jitterbug), “White cliffs of Dover” (foxtrot), “Carolina Moon” (waltz), Vera’s Lynn’s “We’ll meet again” and “Jump, Jive and Wail”

There will also be displays by Bodmin Town Museum and Cornwall’s Regimental Museum with stories and artefacts linked to the American GI’s who stayed in Bodmin just before they departed for the Normandy landings.

We will also be selling handmade poppies made by the local community last year, to commemorate the Armistice Centenary and which were part of our ‘Passing Bells’ Poppy Tribute to the fallen soldiers from Cornwall in WW1.

Tickets for the D-Day Tea Dance are available on-line from the Box Officeand from the St Petroc’s Parish Centre.
